KEVIN JOAQUIN GARCIA
Kevin Garcia is a Detroit born drummer and percussionist based in Brooklyn, New York. Kevin most frequently works with Grammy and Juno Award winning artists The Duhks, a band comprised of artists from North America and Sweden, that plays many diverse musical genres including Cajun, Gospel, Appalachian, Quebecois, and West African. Their work is frequently featured on television and radio, and reviewed in newspapers, magazines, and journals world wide. NPR named The Duhks among the top ten best live acts in the world among Bjork, Beck, and St. Vincent, and The Duhks were made Honorary Cajuns by the City of Lafayette, Louisiana during Festival International in 2014. An ever expanding multi-instrumentalist, Garcia plays drum set of all styles, hand percussion of many different cultures from around the world, hybrid drum set/hand percussion set-ups, classical percussion, keyboard percussion including marimba, vibraphone, and glockenspiel, electronic instruments utilizing trigger pads and effects modules, and sound creation/manipulation software. Due to his dedication to many techniques and disciplines, Kevin finds himself working in disparate settings in the music world, from headlining festivals of 60,000 playing Cajón, Doumbek, and Djembe, to playing punk drum set on Broadway, kicking jazz, funk, and Brasilian music at Lincoln Center, to accompanying dance for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Living in New York City and traveling the world on tour, Garcia is always working with performers from around the globe such as Bright Light Bright Light from Wales, Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy from Nova Scotia, Jose Llana from the Philippines, Djustpora from Senegal and Mali, Pape Armand Boye and Badu Boye from Senegal and Germany, Nimesh Gandhi from India, Bartosz Hadala from Poland, and The Mystery Fax Machine Orchestra from England. Teachers of note Garcia has studied with include: Billy Hart, Judy Moonert, Boris Amontete Tchango, and Ustad Mulazim Hussain. Kevin holds degrees from Western Michigan University in Percussion Performance and Philosophy. He also attended the Halewynstitchting Conservatory in Belgium for Jazz, Ghanaian, Togolese, and Cameroonian Percussion Performance, and The Lake Placid Institute for Composition and Improvisation.
